The word suzani derives from a Persian word "suzan" which means "a needle". Needlework is a skill girls learnt from a young age. Just as soon as girls felt comfortable holding a needle they, with a help of female members of the family, learnt how to embroider. They embroidered suzani bedspreads, wall hangings, table clothes, etc. Better pieces of embroidery work were saved for their dowries. By the time a girl was ready for a marriage one could read her personality and character in suzani embroideries she made. Materials

Base fabric: 100% hand-woven silk fabric from Margilan, Uzbekistan. This city is the main ikat producing center of Uzbekistan and Central Asia.
Embroidery threads: silk colored with natural dyes.

Care instructions

Both base fabric and silk threads are color-fast. However, if washed, the suzani will lose its shape. This is why professional dry cleaning is recommended.
